PolicyReveal
An Independent Editorial Watchdog Vol. I · No. 9 · September 2026

We exist because nobody else reads the contract.

PolicyReveal is an independent watchdog publication for the U.S. life insurance industry. We investigate carriers, dissect policies, and translate the documents that govern hundreds of billions of dollars in consumer premium into plain English.

— 01 · The Mission

Why this publication exists.

Life insurance is the largest unregulated-feeling regulated product in American consumer finance. The contracts run forty to a hundred pages. The language is borrowed from actuarial science. The pricing tables, mortality assumptions, and cost-of-insurance scales are filed publicly with state regulators — and almost nobody, including most agents selling the policies, reads them carefully.

The result is an information gap. On one side, carriers and their captive sales forces. On the other, consumers signing thirty-year financial commitments they cannot meaningfully evaluate. That gap is where bad policies get sold, where agents earn commissions on products that don't fit, and where the average buyer leaves five or six figures of avoidable cost on the table.

PolicyReveal exists to close that gap. We are a publication first. Investigative dossiers, carrier files, sales-tactic exposés, glossary entries — all written by people who have actually read the contracts. The X-Ray tool and the independent agent network are features downstream of the journalism, not the reason for it.

— 02 · How We Make Money

The transparency rule.

Every editorial publication has a business model, and the business model shapes what gets covered and what doesn't. We're going to tell you ours up front.

What we do: Yes — this is, in part, a referral business. When you choose to be matched, we earn a fee from the independent agent in our network. But the fee is a flat amount, the same regardless of carrier, product, or premium size — so we have no reason to steer you toward a bigger or more expensive policy. The incentive that corrupts most of this industry is the one we removed.

What we don't do: Take money from insurance carriers, directly or indirectly — no advertising, no sponsorship, no paid placement. And we don't run a lead free-for-all: when you opt in, your information goes to one vetted independent agent, with your consent — never sold to a partner network, auctioned to a lead broker, or handed to a callback farm. One reader, one agent. That's the whole deal.

What we will and won't do.

No carrier preview of drafts. Every verdict is sourced. Corrections are public and permanent. Anonymous sources allowed; anonymous claims are not. The no-captive rule is absolute — captive agents are excluded from the network, by structural rule, even though it costs us money.
